Why this project needs continuous monitoring

Pelagia noctiluca is entering a critical phase in Greek waters. Data collected during Pelagia Logbook Aegean Sea 2025 showed widespread presence and bloom formation across the Aegean, indicating that the region is now moving into a second consecutive year of high jellyfish activity in 2026.

In marine ecology, consecutive bloom years often signal that environmental conditions have become favorable for population expansion, increasing the likelihood of larger and more persistent outbreaks. Without active monitoring, these shifts can go undetected until impacts on tourism, fisheries, and marine ecosystems become severe.

At the same time, early records from western Greece and the Ionian Sea indicate scattered individuals of Pelagia noctiluca. This pattern is typical of the early phase of a bloom cycle and often precedes rapid population growth. Monitoring this transition allows scientists to detect the onset of a new regional bloom before it reaches peak intensity.

By expanding Pelagia Logbook to all of Greece in 2026, the project provides continuous real time tracking of jellyfish dynamics in both the Aegean and the Ionian seas. This ensures that emerging bloom patterns are documented early, allowing communities, researchers, and authorities to respond with evidence based management and public awareness.
What We Offer

🔹 Sightings Table: A searchable table showing location, date, and jellyfish abundance.
🔹 Trend Insights: Monthly summaries and bloom alerts.
🔹 Data Sources: Integrated reports from iNaturalist, Facebook groups, direct email, and our reporting forms.
🔹 Quality Control: Data are validated before publishing to ensure reliability.

Project Goals

  • 🌐 Raise public awareness about jellyfish seasonality and bloom conditions.
  • 🔬 Support scientific research into ecology and population dynamics of Pelagia noctiluca.
  • 🌱 Promote responsible marine stewardship through community participation.
  • 📈 Build long-term datasets for policy and conservation planning.
