About Merman
Merman Conservation
Who We Are

Edinburgh, United Kingdom

Merman Conservation Expeditions Ltd is a United Kingdom based environmental consulting and conservation company working across marine and terrestrial environments. We combine professional environmental consulting, applied ecological research, citizen science, and modern digital systems to support evidence-based decision making and long-term biodiversity protection.

Our work bridges the gap between traditional environmental consultancy and transparent, accessible conservation practice. We deliver credible data, clear analysis, and practical recommendations grounded in science and ethics.

The Meaning Behind the Name
Merman
Mer means sea. Man means human. While a merman is a mythical sea-human figure, for us the word carries a deeper meaning. It symbolises the inseparable connection between people and the ocean. We are not observers standing apart from nature; we are part of it. The name reminds us that conservation begins with recognising our place within ecosystems, not above them.
Conservation
Conservation means managing natural resources and ecosystems sustainably to preserve biodiversity and cultural heritage. It involves protecting habitats, wildlife, and the environment from threats like pollution, climate change, and overuse. Our focus is wildlife conservation: protecting wild animals and their habitats, maintaining ecosystem balance, and preventing species extinction through protected areas, habitat restoration, and community engagement.
Expeditions
Expeditions are purposeful journeys for exploration and research, often in remote or challenging places. Our expeditions combine adventure with science, inviting people to participate directly in conservation and discovery. Every journey is an opportunity to gather data, share knowledge, and leave a positive mark on the places we visit.
What We Do

Christos Taklis
Christos Taklis
Director, Merman Conservation Expeditions Ltd
I care deeply about wildlife conservation and believe that science should be something everyone can take part in. My work focuses on involving people from all walks of life in observing, recording, and protecting nature through citizen science.
A Lifelong Commitment to Nature

For over 15 years, I have worked with conservation groups, researchers, and communities across Europe and other continents to study wildlife and raise awareness about biodiversity. My background in taxonomy and field surveys has taught me that some of the most important contributions to science come from everyday observers who care about the world around them.

Why I Started Merman Conservation

This company was created to offer people a chance to take part in real conservation work. My goal is to make scientific research more accessible and meaningful by blending outdoor exploration with hands-on wildlife observation. Each project is designed to help people connect with nature, learn new skills, and contribute valuable data to help protect the species and habitats we all depend on.

Bridging Adventure and Scientific Inquiry

As Director, my role is not about holding a title, but about helping build a community of curious, motivated people who want to explore the natural world and protect it. Our expeditions welcome everyone with an interest in nature, from beginners to experienced naturalists.

Mission & Vision
Mission
To provide reliable, ethical, and evidence-based environmental consulting and conservation services that support biodiversity protection and informed environmental decisions.
Vision
A future where environmental consulting is transparent, participatory, and driven by continuously updated ecological data rather than static reports.
Our Purpose

At Merman Conservation Expeditions Ltd, our mission is to protect wildlife and natural habitats through consultation, hands-on conservation work, scientific research, and public education. We focus on practical fieldwork to study and safeguard biodiversity, with a strong emphasis on coastal and marine ecosystems.

How We Work

We carry out ecological surveys, species monitoring, and outreach projects that raise awareness of the beauty and importance of the ecosystems we serve. We work alongside local communities, researchers, and citizen scientists to collect meaningful data and support informed conservation decisions.

Our Commitment

We do not promise to solve every global challenge, but we believe every expedition, every record, and every conversation makes a difference. Our strength lies in steady, thoughtful efforts that bring people closer to nature and help protect it for the future.

A Not-for-Profit Organisation
Merman Conservation Expeditions Ltd operates on a not-for-profit basis. No dividends are paid to any director, shareholder, or associate. The only payments made are fair wages to staff and contractors hired to carry out the work. Every pound earned through services, grants, and donations is reinvested directly into field research, citizen science programmes, and conservation operations.
Core Pillars
Environmental Consulting
  • Wildlife and biodiversity assessments
  • Species occurrence and behaviour analysis
  • Human-wildlife interaction evaluation
  • Environmental risk assessment
  • Evidence-based conservation recommendations
All consulting services follow documented methodologies ensuring data traceability, scientific credibility, and professional accountability.
Research & Monitoring
We conduct applied ecological research supporting conservation planning, long-term monitoring, and scientific knowledge development across marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Research outputs include peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, and curated datasets.
Citizen Science & Public Participation
We design and manage citizen science programmes that allow the public to contribute meaningful environmental data. Data is transformed into live dashboards presenting maps, statistics, and trends that update continuously.
Digital Conservation Systems
We apply low-cost digital systems to environmental consulting and research, enabling transparency, accessibility, and long-term data value through dynamic reporting and geospatial visualisation.
Education & Outreach
We deliver workshops, training sessions, public talks, educational publications, and science communication initiatives that translate complex environmental data into clear and responsible knowledge.
Our Approach

We operate with scientific integrity, ethical responsibility, and transparency at every stage. Impact is prioritised over scale. Data quality, trust, and long-term conservation value guide every decision.

United Kingdom based. International reach. Delivering environmental consulting and conservation services nationally and internationally with a strong focus on science, transparency, and real-world impact.
